Antikatechon has released their fifth album, I Feel Nothing But Repulsion. On this album the Italian solo-artist, Davide Del Col, delves into highly disturbing and bleak soundscapes. Antikatechon have been aptly tagged by their label as post-industrial doom ambient. This album has intricately detailed harsh layers of sounds, often backed by a sort of white noise, which build tension and often a bit of anxiety in the listener. Yet within this tense collection of tracks, we find moments of subtle beauty.
"The Epitome Of Ingratitude" does not attempt to hide the bleak and devastating fury of I Feel Nothing But Repulsion. This track has a slow but steady build to a harsh wall of white noise, which slowly draws to a close by the end of the track. The main focus here is on the texture of these drones. "And All My Dreams, Torn Asunder" brings a much needed respite from the onslaught of the previous track. Here we are given a calm and meditative drone gently rolling in the background as a warm piano arrangement begs our attention. But this peacefulness doesn't last long before the calming drones progress into a much harsher shriek. As the white noise recedes, a woman's voice can be heard speaking through the static. She continues speaking as the track slowly draws to a close, leaving the listener in a state of suspense. "I Feel Nothing But Repulsion" is a fitting title for this track as it will surely not be pleasing to all listeners. This is definitely the harshest and most noisy track on the album. Yet again for the right person, these sounds have a lot of intricacies and almost a ritualistic feel. "From Defeat To Disintegration" is to me the most beautiful track on the album. There is a ritualistic aspect to this track, which holds the listeners attention through all the various ups and downs. A piano arrangement is looped throughout the track, as a drone gently builds to full force in the background. As the drone slowly recedes, a variation of the previous arrangement returns to the forefront bringing with it an almost nostalgic feeling. By the time we reach "The Smell Of A Dying Saviour" we have been numbed by the bleak and doomed atmospheres of the previous tracks. Antikatechon slowly builds up this track, from a very quiet and subdued guitar drone over some other somber sounds to a roaring wall of noise, which drops back to silence and refocuses on its dark somber atmospherics. A final guitar drone gently carries the track to its close over some quite theatrical synths.
Antikatechon are a bit of a love or hate project, on the surface I Feel Nothing But Repulsion is not aesthetically pleasing. There are vast sections of the album which grind away at bleak isolationist sounds that seem to be dredged from some abandoned industrial complex. Yet these expanses are dotted with moments of beauty and clarity, be it a lonely violin or piano entering the mix or the staticy transmission of some ancient sound-clip, there is never too long of a wait before something of interest and beauty re-enters the mix. It will be these moments of beauty which pull in many listeners, and the harsher moments may well drive some of them away. I Feel Nothing But Repulsion is certainly not for everyone, but if you like your ambient music to have a visceral effect on you, and you like intricately layered harsh drones, this is the album for you.

Antikatechon: "I Feel Nothing but Repulsion" CD reviewed on "Vox Empirea"

The readers interested in the deepening of the biographical-discographical aspects of the Italian solo-act Antikatechon - aka Davide Del Col - they will find every exhaustive detail in the Vox Empirea's reviews section for the year 2013, precisely in the page dedicated to the albums "Chrisma Crucifixorum" and "Out Hunting For Teeth" - this last one realized together with the solo-project Nimh - followed in turn in the same year by the six episodes included in the full-length "Woe Is The Reward", distributed by the glorious Polish label Rage In Eden and by the inclusion over time of various tracks in different dark-ambient playlists, until the publication of this new album entitled "I Feel Nothing But Repulsion" licensed in 2016 always by the home records Rage In Eden. Otherworldly dark-ambient / doom-ambient / noise / post-industrial, deeply evocative and brimful of strong symbolism, that one played by Antikatechon is mostly a perpetual evolution towards destabilizing concepts and extremely realistic sonic allegories, as if they were abstract transpositions of images and moods while they precipitate with slowness into the most obscure walls of mind. An important guest into the album is Giuseppe Verticchio - the Roman artist and composer specialized in genres ambient / dark-ambient / industrial / electronic / shoegaze / experimental / ritual-ethnic music, better known by his projects Nimh, Hall Of Mirrors, Twist Of Fate and Maribor - who's the record engineer and the guest-musician of one of the five long suites present in the tracklist. The first of these is "The Epitome Of Ingratitude," an intensely suggestive dark-ambient executed through immaterial, alienating sounds, able to drag the imagination into a mesmerizing rise of siderurgic noises, motionless, subterranean pads, dilated acoustics, torrential hyper-frequencies and dissonant melodies, elements planned for the reaching of a perceptive state similar to hypnosis, in which the 'time-space' criterion is totally annihilated. The stifling, depressed segments of piano played by the guest-musician Day Before Us - aka the neoclassic / cinematic / dark ambient French solo-project represented by Philippe Blache - they spread among the abysmal glumness of the following "And All My Dreams, Torn Asunder", in my opinion quotabile as one of the best Antikatechon's compositions, created by impetuous currents of laptop on which density they gradually elevate waves of interferences, industrial turbulences and, further on, piano counterpoints alternate in rapid succession, to form an essential, monolithic loop full of elegance and classicism, all softened by feminine spoken-words in French audible in the background. The namesake "I Feel Nothing But Repulsion" is a dark-ambient module in which the oppressive coverage of keyboards little by little incorporates heavy guitar-electricity and massive, perforating flows of distorted noises mixed with industrial superimpositions. "From Defeat To Disintegration", a wonderful track played in collaboration with Nimh, propagates evanescent 'sound-masses' built through nostalgic, replicated piano melodies floating in the emotional desolation of dark-ambient, while a storm of electronic-noises approaches threateningly on the horizon wrapping and obfuscating each note, then to concede piano serenity after its dissolution, all in a succession of melancholy, tensions, sweetness, and inner torment. The release concludes with "The Smell Of A Dying Saviour", circumscribed at first within extended ambient chords ambient densely pigment of darkness, on which they reverberate endlessly heavy strokes of keyboard and a dry rumble of moving objects, subsequently eroded by vortices of metal screeching in a twist of gloomy orchestrality and atmospheric suspensions. Antikatechon is the designer of a spectral work such as an ectoplasmic emission, totally submerged by artificial noises and by harmonious emptiness, yet at the same time so psychically and physically penetrating, intelligible, able to go beyond the material meanings of sound, permeating of restlessness and alienation the senses of the listener. "I Feel Nothing But Repulsion" is a discographical event of extraordinary proportions in the scene globally defined as 'dark-ambient', highlighting him from many similar productions for having expanded the limited sonic expression towards something alive and functional, which effects pass through the mental vastness taking possession of our will and dematerializing within it any rational paradigm. This great album speaks by the powerful, charming voice of darkness. All the rest is only silence.

Antikatechon: "I Feel Nothing but Repulsion" CD reviewed on "Ver Sacrum"
Nuovo disco per Antikatechon, progetto ambient-industrial di Davide Del Col intitolato I Feel Nothing But Repulsion che si presenta con un’ínquietante copertina macabra. Su Ver Sacrum avevo gia’ parlato del buon “Woe Is The Reward”, un lavoro che si caratterizzava per una genuina tensione apocalittica e che alternava momenti deflagranti ad altri piu’ quieti in cui emergevano melodie arcane. Anche in quest’occasione sostazialmente la formula non cambia: coadiuvato dal fido Giuseppe Verticchio la musica creata da Davide Del Col ci aggredisce subito fin dalla traccia iniziale “The Epitome Of Ingratitude” con cupi drones di matrice industrial prossimi alla mitica scuola svedese della Cold Meat Industry. Nella successiva “And All My Dreams, Torn Asunder” troviamo come ospite Philippe Blache dei Day Before Us: l’atmosfera e’ decadente e irreale, con le note struggenti di un pianoforte che vengono progressivamente coperte da sonorita”noise disturbanti e metalliche. La title-track si muove sempre in territori ambient-industrial con ambientazioni minilmali che evocano stati d’animo inquieti. In “‘From Defeat To Disintagration” (in collaborazione con Nimh) la tensione scende mentre la musica ci porta in un paesaggio irreale dai contorni cangianti. La conclusiva “The Smell Of A Dying Saviour” si avvicina all’ambient piu’ classica e ci avvolge un un’oscura cappa magmatica di immobilita’ da cui emergono tenui riflessi di un universo parallelo.

Antikatechon: "I Feel Nothing but Repulsion" CD reviewed on "Distorsioni"
Il sodalizio tra
Antikatechon (alias Davide Del Col) e l’etichetta
polacca Rage In Eden continua ancora oggi con l’uscita di
questo nuovo disco a due anni dal precedente “Woe is The
Reward”.
La lunghezza delle
singole tracce e dell’album non deve lasciarci spaventare: ci
troviamo indubbiamente di fronte al miglior lavoro mai pubblicato da
Del Col, un disco che già a partire dai primi minuti di ascolto
promette benissimo e che non tradisce le aspettative negli ultimi
minuti.
Abbiamo già trattato la
discografia di Antikatechon su Distorsioni: è possibile
quindi che qualche lettore possa aspettarsi un nuovo disco dark
ambient o ambient industrial.
Di sicuro questo è un
disco ambient (poiché privo di base ritmica) e nero come la pece, ma
etichettare un lavoro come questo sarebbe un mero escamotage
giornalistico.
Del Col questa volta
abbandona le tematiche sacro-apocalittiche, ad eccezione dell’ultimo
brano The Smell of a Dying Saviour (la puzza di un Salvatore
moribondo), per una riflessione sui rapporti sociali a metà anni ‘10
(i titoli dei brani sono eloquenti: “Il Simbolo
dell’ingratitudine”, “E tutti i miei sogni, fatti a pezzi”,
“Non provo altro che repulsione”, “Dalla sconfitta alla
disintegrazione”).
La sua musica in questo
album è quanto mai isolazionista, malinconica e, in vari momenti,
cinematografica. In The Epitome of Ingratitude suoni concreti
e voci “trovate” (dal cinema o dalla televisione) si celano
dietro drone e sibili digitali; verso metà brano emergono melodie
malinconiche da un magma di suoni digitali.
And All My Dreams,
Torn Asunder è un brano caratterizzato dalle cinematiche melodie
pianistiche del musicista francese Day Before Us (alias
Philippe Blache) che si scontrano con i sibili analogici e
digitali di Del Col dai quali emerge una voce recitante femminile in
francese.
I Feel Nothing But
Repulsion è una abrasiva suite ambient-noise in tre parti, la
prima basata su drone e noise chitarristici riverberatissimi, la
successiva caratterizzata da una cupa sequenza elettronica su cui Del
Col suona tenebrosi e ossessivi riff con la chitarra, l’ultima
basata su noise chitarristici sotto i quali si muove uno spettrale
pad sintetico a nota fissa.

Disintegration è realizzata a quattro mani con Nimh
(alias Giuseppe Verticchio), mixing/mastering engineer
dell’album: è una suite per piano e rumori digitali, che si
trasforma negli ultimi quattro minuti in una potenziale colonna
sonora per sequenze cinematografiche drammatiche.
The
Smell of a Dying Saviour è anch’essa in tre parti: nella prima
una chitarra riverberatissima (di gusto tardo pinkfloydiano) tesse
melodie su droni digitali e field recordings, nella seconda invece
feroci noise chitarristici primeggiano su un drone anch’esso
ultra-saturo, infine la terza è una possibile soundtrack
fantascientifica di matrice ambient elettronica.
Il compositore raccoglie
qui il meglio delle idee dei tre album precedenti, concentrandolo e
distillandolo abilmente e aggiungendovi qualche novità: il rischio
di ripetersi era dietro l’angolo, ma la maturità stilistica di Del
Col (raggiunta in quasi vent’anni di attività) ci dona un disco
che rappresenta la summa della sperimentazione a nome Antikatechon.
Le inquietanti, e al
contempo affascinanti, foto dell’artista inglese Bactrian Arts
completano il concept malato del disco (unica pecca l’utilizzo del
jewel case al posto di un elegante digipak). Raccomandato ai cultori
del suono ambient più cupo e sperimentale.

"Working under the moniker of Antikatechon, Davide Del Col has published a number of classic dark ambient releases for Silentes and Rage in Eden. His musical universe voluntary invites the listeners to travel through deep and eerie soundscaping experiences which profoundly affect our emotions, generate powerful image and vivid metaphors about human finitude, psychic confinement and the otherworld. This new album entitled "I Feel Nothing but Repulsion" carries on Antikatechon’s aesthetics for isolationist soundscapes, bleak noises and darkly industrial musical excursions.
